Spring has Sprung- Illustration Friday

I just hate when the colour all washes out when you scan coloured pencil. Sorry. Nonetheless here you have my famous Prickly Pear Cactus. It wasn't until I dug it up out of the woods and dragged it home that I discovered it had imbedded thousands of microscopic needles into my body! (Elmer's glue works wonders on removing cactus needles BTW!) Don't miss my other "hike find" below!

Artists create with their hands in many ways. I also enjoy working the earth.
Since I am profoundly proud of my "Weed Tree" I would like to share it with you all. (Some of you may recall I posted a photo of it when I was still new to the blogosphere last year.)
I frequently hike in the woods looking for plants to drag home and grow in my landscaping. I now have a beautiful Northern Prickly Pear Cactus a Holly Tree and two Yucca plants that are flourishing as we speak. But the one I am most proud of is my Cherry Tree. Everyone made fun of me for nearly a year, telling me it was a weed. Well, just look at her now! See with the right materials the earth can be your canvas too!!!

That's glorious! What a sense of satisfaction you must have for nurturing it to these beautiful blossoms!

That is really beautiful ellen!
You really DO create with your hands. Your story of the Cherry Tree (others claimed it was a weed) reminds me of the very first book I ever read: "The Carrot Seed".

I love your illustration, too. Thank you for telling us about "Elmer's Glue". :O)

Your cactus drawing is lovely.
If your scanner doesn't properly reproduce your color intensity, you can restore is with an excellent shareware program called graphic converter.

hey, your link on IF didn't work for me; had to come to your blog directly - i love the sketch - i really like the subdued color that was the result of scanning, but i bet the original is awesome, too.

beautiful drawing...and I love your gardening technique...I travelled with a camp shovel in the back of my truck for the longest time years ago in case I saw something on the side of the road to dig up and bring home ;)

Wow to both pictures! The Prickly Pear Cactus turned out beautiful even with washed out colors. Infact, it kind of suits him. The Cherry Tree is amazing. I always wanted to live in a valley of Cherry Trees and have eternal spring... mmmmmmm

I love your drawing. Even if the color is off it is very pretty. I have had run-ins with those kind of teeny needles and didn't know about the Elmers glue, thanks!

Congrats on your "weed."
After planting Clematis two years in a row and having nothing happen, except that it wilted and pooped out, I did nothing this year... Guess what... It is climbing the long neglected trellis!!

Glad you got the cactus spines out. Lovely drawing.

Great site, nice drawing. I was very excited to see your link to Christine Lavin - I had forgotten how much I grew to love her in college. Not sure how I ended up here, I think from a link off the Everyday Matters website, or a comment from someone there.

You must have a real green thumb, Ellen! Those blooms would make a beautiful painting! Thanks also for your extra nice comment on my "monster" last week. I really appreciate it!
